played more than 16 tournaments in any calendar year.In 2009, Williams competed in a career high 16 tournaments; winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the WTA Tour Championships. However the American scored her best year in 2002 where she would compete in 13 WTA Tour tournaments; winning the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open to finish the year with a won loss record of 56-5.
Last year the American would repeat as champion at the Australian Open and Wimbledon before cutting her feet on glass in a restaurant in Germany which would keep her sidelined from the WTA tour until only last month.
For the year 2010, Williams only played six WTA Tour tournaments; none after Wimbledon.
At Eastbourne last month in her return to the WTA Tour from injury, Williams won one match before losing in the round of sixteen to the top seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia 3-6, 7-6(7-5), 7-5 in a match which lasted for more than three hours.
Then at Wimbledon as the two time defending champion, Williams would reach the fourth round before losing to the inspired play of the 9th seeded Marion Bartoli of France 6-3, 7-6(8-6).
“I showed up and did a halfway decent job and I’ll just continue to build on that,” Williams said of her Wimbledon showing. “I haven’t played in a year except for two tournaments.”
Williams has only once in her career in 2009 played 16 WTA Tour tournaments.
Troubled by foot injuries and blood clots in her lung corrected by emergency surgery, Williams could need a wildcard in order to enter the fourth and final grand slam of the year, the US Open, depending on her performance in this summer’s US Open Series hardcourt tournaments.
Williams is scheduled to compete in WTA Tour tournaments in Stanford, Toronto and Cincinnati before returning to the US Open at New York August 29th.
Williams took the US Open title in 1999, 2002 and 2008 and first topped the WTA Tour rankings in July of 2002 as a 20 year old.
